About

Who is the blog author?
I am Paul, and I was born in the UK and have lived and worked most of my life abroad, predominantly in southeast Asia and the Arabian Gulf - two amazing parts of the world. Currently I am doing doctoral research on impact evaluations in international development and as such, thought a wee blog about what I am working on would be good.

All the articles and musings on the page are my own, as I test out ideas, prod the field of impact evaluation and struggle through the marathon of a PhD. Its not all plain sailing that's for sure. Exhilirating at times though.

I am researching at Lancaster University in the UK, and am enroled at the HighWire Doctoral Training Centre. This is a post disciplinary research program combining management, design and technology, and seeking to contribute to digital innovation in the UK.

Angle
My take on technologies, digital and otherwise, is the importance of the how tools mesh with what we do, making social practices, and so I try to understand what people do around technologies to see what their effects are. The shiny silicon magic wears off pretty quick for me, but the lasting effect is key. Is a new evaluation MIS good? Do smart phones rock? Well, that depends on who its for, what it achieves, and what it displaces historically.

Acknowledgements
Thanks to Scott Robinson's flicker account for the header image - a lovely shot of knotted wood, with a nail in. I thought it made a nice visual for the blog, and liked the natural colours, shapes and the artificial nail stuck in the middle. Kind of like modern day practice.
